The 1st New Release of the ODROID-M1S

The ODROID-M1S is a state-of-the-art embedded platform, developed over the last six months in response to market needs. Compared to the ODROID-M1, the board has been slimmed down by approximately 20%, power consumption has been reduced by 20%, 14 header pins have been added and a 64GB eMMC chip has been embedded. We believe this will help significantly reduce the cost of building affordable and sustainable embedded systems. The product will be available until at least 2036, which is important for industrial customers.

2 The RK3566 processor

The SOC in the M1S is the RK3566, a younger sister to the RK3568 used in the original M1. This allows the majority of software development work to be reused. Due to differences in bootloader and kernel settings, existing operating system images for the M1 cannot be used directly, but porting is quickly possible through a simple process.

3 Embedded eMMC memory

For the first time in the ODROID board series, the eMMC chip has been soldered to the PCB instead of using a removable eMMC module. The 64GB capacity should be sufficient for most embedded systems. The speed of eMMC as measured by the fio command is around 180MiB/s, which is 3-5 times faster than typical microSD cards.

4 M.2 NVMe slot

In case 64GB of eMMC memory is insufficient, a 2280 NVMe SSD can be used. The M1S has an M.2 NVMe slot, which allows access to a large amount of data. Compared to the original M1 model, the M1S has a reduced NVMe transfer speed of about 1/4, at ~400 MiB/s, which is still sufficient for building various advanced embedded systems. Note that M.2 SATA devices cannot be used. The M.2 slot only supports the PCIe (M-Key) interface.

5 Power consumption

When booting the M1S and putting the Ubuntu Desktop OS into an idle state, power consumption is a maximum of 3.7 W, dropping to 1.5 W when the GUI is idle. When the HDMI monitor is disconnected, idle power consumption drops to 1.0 W, and 0.7 W when the Ethernet cable is disconnected. During the CPU load test without HDMI output and Ethernet connection, the power consumption is approximately 3.2 W, showing a power saving of approximately 25% compared to the original ODROID-M1.

6 Thermal characteristics

During the CPU load test, the CPU temperature did not exceed 65°C and the clock frequency was kept at its maximum level, indicating no thermal throttling. With low power consumption, less heat is generated and cooling is sufficient with a standard heatsink.

7 GPIO connector

40-pin and 14-pin connectors are available for general purpose functions (GPIO). They offer various functions such as digital IO, UART, I2C, PWM, ADC, SPI, USB 2.0 host, analogue audio output, power-on and reset signals.

8 MIPI-DSI

A four-channel MIPI-DSI port can be directly connected to the LCD panel. An ODROID-Vu8S kit with an 8-inch 800×1280 display and capacitive touchscreen is available. By mounting the ODROID-M1S on the back of the Vu8S kit, an Android or Linux-based HMI device can be easily built.

9TH NPU

In line with industry trends, the ODROID-M1S is equipped with a neural network processing unit (NPU) offering up to 0.8 TOPS. It is possible to run the various TensorFlow Lite and ONNX models on Ubuntu Linux.

10 Software support

The ODROID-M1S supports various operating systems, including Android 11 and Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04 LTS, offering various drivers and libraries for GPU, MIPI DSI, GPIO and NPU, as well as the Android Things framework with numerous application examples.
