SVL01-Z is a smart, highly sensitive mmWave motion sensor 10 GHz with a wall light switch function. The device detects motion and minor movements in the room, controls lighting via a built-in relay, and communicates via Zigbee 3.0 with the Tuya or Smart Life app.

In practice, the SVL01-Z works best as an advanced motion sensor for automatically turning lights on and off. Thanks to mmWave radar technology, it is more sensitive than classic PIR sensors, but it should not be treated as a precise presence sensor for a person remaining completely still.

Motion sensor for automatic light control

The main function of the device is automatic lighting control upon detecting motion or minor movements in the room. The sensor can turn on the light when entering a room, hallway, bathroom, or other space, and then turn it off after a set time.

The built-in switch also allows for manual light control, so the module can replace a classic wall switch while adding automatic motion detection. The button function and sensor function can be used together or separated in automations.

mmWave technology instead of classic PIR

The mmWave radar 10 GHz detects motion differently than a typical PIR sensor. A classic PIR reacts mainly to changes in thermal radiation, while a radar sensor reacts to motion and small movements in the detection field. Thanks to this, the SVL01-Z can operate more sensitively and stably in many lighting applications.

However, please remember that the SVL01-Z model is best treated in practice as a highly sensitive motion sensor, and not as a professional presence sensor capable of reliably detecting a person remaining completely still for a long time.

Simple installation and two connection methods

The device is designed for flexible installation in a flush-mounted box. The module supports two installation methods, allowing it to be used both in installations with a neutral wire N and in many older installations without an N wire.

• Operation without neutral wire N: the switch is installed in place of a traditional mechanical switch, connecting the phase wire L and the output to the lighting L1. In this variant, the required minimum power of the connected bulb for stable operation is 7 W.
• Operation with neutral wire N: if there is a free N wire in the box, it is recommended to connect it. This improves stability and eliminates the problem of potential flickering at very low loads, e.g., LED bulbs below 5 W. In this mode, the switch can operate with a load from 0 W, which also allows it to be used as a smart sensor controlling other smart home elements.

Automation and detection characteristics

The use of an integrated radar allows for automatically turning on lights or other devices upon motion detection. The detection module is placed in the central part of the switch, and the declared detection range directly in front reaches up to 6 meters.

In practice, the effectiveness of detection depends on the installation location, direction of movement, angle relative to the sensor, room size, and settings in the app. The best results are obtained when a person moves within the sensor's field of view. The larger the angle relative to the radar axis, the shorter the real range may be.

The switch-off delay function allows you to set the time the light will remain on after motion is detected. This helps limit frequent light switching and adjust the device's operation to a specific room.

Support via Tuya and Zigbee 3.0

The sensor communicates via Zigbee 3.0 and requires a compatible Tuya gateway. Once added to the Tuya or Smart Life app, it can work in automations with other smart home devices, such as lighting, relays, ventilation, alarms, or voice scenes.

Description of sensor settings in the Tuya app

After adding the device to the Tuya or Smart Life app, settings are available that allow you to adjust the operation of the motion sensor and light switch to your needs.

• Timer – allows for automatic switching of the light on and off at a set time.
• PIR Delay – determines the time the light will remain on after motion is detected. This is also the time after which the sensor will change its status to No motion.
• Trigger Sensitivity – motion detection sensitivity setting. The value 0 means the lowest sensitivity.
• Restart Status – allows you to set the switch status after power is restored. Available options:
  • On
  • Off
  • Last status
• Back Light switch – allows you to turn off the switch backlight.
• Induction Lighting – when this option is enabled, motion detection will automatically turn on the light.
• Induction Lights off – when this option is enabled, the light will be automatically turned off after the time set in the parameter PIR Delay.

How to set automatic light switching on and off?

• Enable the option Induction Lighting.
• Enable the option Induction Lights off.
• Set the light operation time in the parameter PIR Delay.

Thanks to this, the device will automatically turn on the light upon motion detection and turn it off after the set time has elapsed.

Possibility to separate functions

It is also possible to separate the light switch and motion sensor functions. The device can act as a regular wall switch, and the signal from the motion sensor can be used independently to trigger smart home scenes, e.g., controlling other lighting, ventilation, alarms, or app notifications.
